Jamie Carragher makes claim about Liverpool straight after Man United beat Man City to win the FA Cup

Liverpool’s FA Cup conquerors Man United have won the competition after beating Man City.

The Reds lost to Erik ten Hag’s side in dismal fashion in the quarter-finals in March. A last-second goal from Amad Diallo sealed their fate.

And after scraping through a tight semi-final against Coventry City, United surprisingly dished out defeat to Pep Guardiola and City at Wembley on Saturday.

From a Liverpool point of view, it only served to highlight the chance they missed by losing to United. That could easily have been Jurgen Klopp and his squad up there on the podium.

Nevertheless, you have to credit United. And commenting on their trophy win after the game, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher made a point about the Reds’ and their bitter rivals.

Jamie Carragher makes Liverpool FA Cup point

Had Liverpool have held on against United at Old Trafford, they’d have surely beaten Coventry in the semis.

From there, the date would have been set against City. In what would have been Klopp’s final game in charge, Liverpool could have given the boss a glorious send-off.

It wasn’t to be, though. And despite the fact that United finished 8th in the Premier League, they’ve come out of the season with a trophy to show for it.

Liverpool did too, of course, winning the Carabao Cup back in February. Another piece of silverware to add to the club’s distinguished trophy history.

And taking to X, Carragher claimed that United’s win on Saturday highlighted a similarity with Liverpool.

“Manchester United & Liverpool are the two most successful clubs in England,” says the 46-year-old. “They are not always the best BUT……they both have an ability to continually win trophies when the odds are stacked against them.

“United not given a chance today, Liverpool end up winning carabao cup with kids v Chelsea,” Carragher added. “And it’s the 25th May if you need another reminder,” he concluded, referencing the anniversary of Liverpool’s miraculous Champions League final win against AC Milan in 2005.

Who has won more trophies – Liverpool or Man United?

No Liverpool supporter ever wants to see United lift silverware. Remembering the circumstances they beat the Reds in the cup this season makes it all worse.

Nevertheless, Liverpool are still in the lead when it comes to overall trophies.

As Carragher points out, the two teams are the most successful in English football history. The Reds have won 51 major trophies, the Red Devils 47.

Liverpool 19 6 13 10 3 4 0 1

Man United 20 3 8 6 1 1 1 2

It’s a shame to have seen United claw on back in the tally on Saturday, but Liverpool still hold a clear advantage.

With confusion over the managerial situation at Old Trafford, it remains to be determined whether they will pose a threat to Liverpool’s tally next season.

For now though, they’ll be celebrating long into the bank holiday weekend.
