Mo Salah celebrates turning 30 with children’s football birthday cake

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has been mocked by fans who believe his birthday cake was intended for a five-year-old child.

Salah turned 30 years old on Wednesday, and to celebrate he posted a picture of himself beaming in front of a birthday cake. “Thank you for your birthday wishes,” the Egyptian wrote as a caption to his 16.6million Twitter followers. So far so normal.

But you didn’t have to look much closer to see what plenty of his followers thought deserved comment: a gigantic football-shaped cake perched on top of a green base. To some, the classic black and white style football with a happy birthday message looked out of place in front of one of the best players in the world celebrating his passage into a fourth decade on earth.

“Me when I was 5… Mo salah at his big age,” wrote one fan in a quote-tweet. “Childish cake,” added another bluntly. “Mans stole a 5-year-old’s birthday cake from the bakery,” joked another.

“Mo Salah getting the birthday cake every seven-year-old dreams of,” wrote one fan in reply. “Cake looks grim,” added another. “Whoever made this cake has never seen a football before,” concluded another.

“Yaya will be jealous,” wrote one joker, referring to former Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure, who was famously upset that his club did not buy him a cake to celebrate his birthday – which is May 13 for future reference.

Toure did not get a cake on his special day in 2014, which came just a few days after City had lifted the Premier League trophy. Toure’s agent Dimitri Seluk then criticised the club for not properly celebrating his client’s 31st birthday.

It is unclear at this stage whether Liverpool bought Salah his massive football cake, but there is something the forward would surely like more from his employers. Salah is still yet to completely clear up his future at the club following months of speculation about a new contract.

Unlike his teammate Sadio Mane, Salah is staying put for the 2022/23 season, but his current deal expires in June 2023. He could therefore walk away as a free agent at the end of next season if his contract demands are not met.

After a campaign in which he shared the Golden Boot, Salah wants a weekly wage which reflects his status as one of the Premier League’s best and most consistent players. In the meantime, a cake can’t do any harm.
