After a brilliant first season under Erik ten Hag, Rashford is enduring a terrible 2023/24 campaign, having scored just two goals in 18 games so far.
The England forward hit a new low on Saturday, December 2, putting in a woeful performance in the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United and was hauled off after 61 minutes.
The 26-year-old has unsurprisingly come in for a lot of criticism, with former United star Steve Bruce calling out his ‘petulant’ display at St. James Park.
Liverpool legend Carragher was even more scathing, telling Sky Sports on Sunday: ‘Watching Marcus Rashford last night, that was an unacceptable performance for a few reasons.
‘That lad didn’t play midweek, so if there’s any little, mitigating circumstances of players not being at 100%, [you can put down to] it’s playing Wednesday night away in Europe and then you play Saturday and the travel.
‘I’ve been a local player and it’s not easy being a local player especially when you team are not doing well. For Gary [Neville], Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, all those lads – more often than not they [United] were doing well.

‘But for Marcus Rashford, and myself and probably Steven Gerrard at Liverpool, it’s up to you to fix it. And you have got to drag other people up with you.
‘Watching Marcus Rashford now, he’s reminding me of Martial and that’s the worst possible thing you can say about him – a foreign player who comes in, hasn’t done the business, doesn’t care really and that’s just a fact with Martial.
‘Marcus Rashford is now looking like Anthony Martial and as a local player it’s your job to drag those other players up and if you’re confidence is down or if you’re not scoring goals or creating assists, you’re a problem.
‘You do not stop running for that badge and that shirt and your supporters because you’re supposedly one of them and what he did last night was nowhere near acceptable. I know he cares but it’s not enough.

Over the past four seasons, Martial has scored just 19 goals across all competitions and many consider the forward, who was signed in 2015 for over £51million, to be a huge flop.
‘There was a player today [in Manchester City’s 3-3 draw with Tottenham] – Son[Heung-min] did not stop running,’ Carragher added.
‘He got his goal and was involved, but when we talk abut great players in this league, Son today didn’t stop running. He was a leader.
‘What you’re asking for from Rashford is leadership. Those players have to look up to him saying that is Manchester United.’
