Manchester United brought the curtain down on their 2023/24 Premier League campaign with a 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Second half goals from Diogo Dalot and Rasmus Hojlund sealed all three points for the Reds, who rode their luck prior to getting their noses in front. Joao Pedro had the pick of the Brighton chances, wasting great opportunities either side of the half-time break.

Despite getting three points on the board, it was not enough for United to leapfrog Newcastle United in the standings; the Magpies won 4-2 at Brentford. United finished the season in eighth – their lowest-ever finish in the Premier League era.

It means United’s only hope of securing European qualification for next season is via winning the FA Cup against Manchester City at Wembley next weekend. If victorious at Wembley, United will participate in the Europa League.

You can recap all of Sunday’s events from the Amex Stadium by reviewing the blog below:

REPORT: United might have a tactical rethink for the FA Cup final after beating Brighton

A good end to a bad league season. Manchester United have a modicum of momentum to take down Wembley Way next week with successive wins for the first time in two months.

Celebrations were not tempered in the away end when Diogo Dalot charged towards them but they will not be extended. Newcastle’s victory at Brentford consigned United to an eighth-place finish, their lowest since 1990. United fans responded at the final whistle by belting out, “Twenty times, twenty times, Man United”.

United’s name will not be in any European competition draws in August unless they defeat four-time reigning champions Manchester City at Wembley. That will not have been lost on their supporters yet they supported with admirable gusto once again.

The United followers have been braced for this inevitability for weeks. There has been a strange atmosphere in the stands over the past fortnight, with a 4-0 thumping at Crystal Palace greeted raucously by those who expertly concealed their disgust in the Arthur Wait Stand at Selhurst Park.

18:01KEY EVENT

RATINGS: Casemiro and Hojlund impress in Brighton victory

Andre Onana

Denied Valentin Barco with a stop at his near post and while his goal led a charmed life at times, Onana did not have to make many noteworthy stops. 6

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Dismal defending invited Barco inside to have the first attempt at goal. Continues to hit a force field whenever he approaches the final third. 5

Casemiro

Defended stoutly alongside another partner in Lisandro Martinez and did brilliantly to clear off the line from Joao Pedro and his pass led to Diogo Dalot’s goal. 7

17:54KEY EVENT

FULL-TIME: BHA 0-2 MUN – United end the season with three points

The full-time whistle blows on United’s 2023/24 Premier League campaign and they finish it with three points. Goals from Dalot and Hojlund have sealed a second successive victory.

However, it is not enough to prevent them from finishing eighth – their lowest-ever finish in the Premier League era.

Bring on the FA Cup final at Wembley next weekend.

17:10SAMUEL LUCKHURST

51′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Casemiro to the rescue

Brighton’s attacking play has had everything but a goal and that will give United hope. Pedro has had two gilt-edged chances either side of the pause and as vigilant as Casemiro was there he should not have had a prayer.

Hojlund has already been told to warm up and unless things change then a change on, or before, the hour is inevitable.

16:48KEY EVENT

HALF-TIME: BHA 0-0 MUN – Level at the break

The half-time whistle sounds at the Amex Stadium and there is nothing to split between the two sides. Brighton, however, have had the best of the chances.

(Image: 2024 Getty Images)

16:47GEORGE SMITH

45′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Added time

The fourth official has indicated there will be a minimum of one additional minute at the end of this first half.

16:45SAMUEL LUCKHURST

43′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Wilcox and Brailsford in conversation

Fernandes has just ballooned a corner out for a goal kick. He has been superb of late but not today.

Wilcox has just been seen speaking at length to Brailsford, pointing out things on the pitch. Time will tell if the former City academy director and head of British cycling can make United a force again.

16:44GEORGE SMITH

42′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Garnacho trying to make something happen

Garnacho gets down the left and smashes a low effort towards the near-post, but Brighton goalkeeper Steele was equal to it and put it behind for a corner.

The resulting corner came to nothing.

16:40GEORGE SMITH

38′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Newcastle get another

Newcastle could be home and hosed by half-time. Alexander Isak has made it 3-0 after 38 minutes.

16:38GEORGE SMITH

36′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Newcastle get a second

Newcastle have netted a second at Brentford. Jacob Murphy has got it. It is turning out to be a great weekend for the Murphy family after Jacob’s brother, Josh, scored twice in the League One play-off final for Oxford United at Wembley yesterday.

16:35SAMUEL LUCKHURST

33′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Ten Hag experimenting

Ten Hag is clearly experimenting with Fernandes ahead of the final next week. It was a success against Newcastle but hasn’t been so far today against a more possession-based team.

Pedro has somehow not scored with the goal at his mercy. They’ve replayed it to sighs from the home crowd.

16:33GEORGE SMITH

32′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Pedro wastes a great chance

Brighton are cutting through United with ease at the moment. Pedro puts an effort wide with the goal at his mercy. He had to score.

16:32STEVEN RAILSTON

31′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Brighton are moving the ball really well

I’ll say it again: Brighton should be ahead. Martinez has just cleared a goal-bound header off the line and although Onana might have got there, the defender couldn’t be sure. This has been a really poor start from United, who are struggling to compete with a Brighton side who dominate possession and move the ball from left to right brilliantly.

(Image: Getty)

16:31GEORGE SMITH

29′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Martinez to the resuce

Brighton are knocking on the United door. Martinez has just cleared a goal-bound header off the line. Onana looked set to claim it, but the former wasn’t prepared to take the risk.

16:28GEORGE SMITH

26′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – McTominay with a great chance

That was a great chance for United to get their noses in front through McTominay. He fires over the bar after a poor first touch let him down. Had he scored, VAR may have had a look for a tight offside call.

16:27STEVEN RAILSTON

26′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Brighton should be ahead

Almost 25 minutes in and Brighton should be ahead. They’ve missed three decent chances now and Adam Webster’s header just flashed wide of the post. They keep knocking at the door and seems inevitable they’ll score first if this continues. United are relying on the long ball to Amad and Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes has looked a bit lost in the false nine role.

16:26SAMUEL LUCKHURST

25′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Ten Hag up and down

The United fans will be aware of two negative scorelines now from the Etihad and the Community Stadium. Brighton have been the better side and Barco has been a fine contributor to their attacks.

Ten Hag has not been an ever-present in the technical area but has come back out. He has been jotting a few notes down and Mitchell van der Gaag has just joined him.

(Image: Getty )

16:24GEORGE SMITH

21′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Newcastle ahead

Bad news for United: Newcastle United lead at Brentford. Harvey Barnes has scored for the Magpies, making it 1-0.

16:21SAMUEL LUCKHURST

20′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – There is no jeopardy about this game

There is no jeopardy about this game and that possibly contributed to the lack of outcry over Dalot not getting booked for cynically halting Adingra after he was nutmegged by the winger.

Mainoo hurt his knee earlier but that was a brief scare and the medical staff did not even come onto the pitch.

16:18STEVEN RAILSTON

17′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – United have space to exploit

There’s space in behind Brighton’s defence to target and Casemiro has attempted a few long balls – Garnacho almost scored from the same approach before. Brighton play a high line and United have the pace to exploit it, with Amad and Garnacho on the wings.

16:17SAMUEL LUCKHURST

15′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Fernandes is buzzing around

Barco had the first big chance after he easily deceived Wan-Bissaka. Barco cut inside yet did so with such ease he was able to stay on his favoured left foot for the shot. He hit it too close to Onana.

Fernandes has dropped deep at times. He is essentially occupying a hybrid role of forward and midfielder again. City’s goal has not deterred the United fans, who are singing loudly about next week’s FA Cup final.

(Image: 2024 Getty Images)

16:14GEORGE SMITH

12′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Onana makes a save

That was a big chance for Brighton. The Seagulls get forward, Barco shoots and is denied by Onana. It was a good stop from the United shot-stopper.

16:13GEORGE SMITH

11′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Mainoo down

Mainoo is down on the beck following a clash with a Brighton forward Pedro. Mainoo pipped him to the ball and was caught by the Brazilian.

He’s now back on his feet and looks set to be able to continue.

16:11GEORGE SMITH

9′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Garnacho almost breaches Brighton’s backline

Garnacho looks set to get in behind the Brighton defence but Moder got back and produced a brilliant challenge to rob him of the ball. It was an excellent recovery from the Seagulls ace.

16:10STEVEN RAILSTON

8′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Mainoo and Amrabat linking up

United are passing it around well now after a sloppy start. Kobbie Mainoo and Sofyan Amrabat seem to combine well, although the latter just got drawn into a pocket of space and Brighton probed forward. The home side are desperate to end the Roberto De Zerbi era on a high note.

16:07SAMUEL LUCKHURST

6′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – United knocking the ball around well

Dalot has already come into midfield to accept the ball from Martinez. United kept the ball for nearly 100 seconds before Brighton got a touch. Martinez looked a little vexed when they were pushed back and Dalot was still awaiting the ball in midfield. Adingra is on Brighton’s right and De Zerbi has ushered him up the pitch to possibly capitalise on Dalot’s wandering.

16:06STEVEN RAILSTON

5′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Brighton fans taunting United

“Just like Brighton, your city is blue,” sing the home crowd. Perfect conditions for a game of football and the away end are in fine voice. In other news, Brentford have just taken the lead against Newcastle. Actually, it’s been ruled out.

16:05GEORGE SMITH

2′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Brentford goal ruled out

United need a favour from Brentford – and they thought they’d got one. Ivan Toney had put the Bees ahead against Newcastle United after just two minutes, but it has been ruled out by VAR.

16:02STEVEN RAILSTON

1′ – BHA 0-0 MUN – Brailsford and Wilcox in a

ttendance

Sir Dave Brailsford and Jason Wilcox are in attendance at the Amex Stadium and today could be more food for thought ahead of the summer transfer window.
