Kevin De Bruyne provides update on Man City injury return at F1 Abu Dhabi GP

Kevin De Bruyne is expecting to be back playing for Manchester City in January following a long spell out through injury.

De Bruyne has been missing for City since limping off the pitch 22 minutes into the first Premier League game of the season in August. He underwent surgery on a recurring hamstring problem and is now undergoing rehabilitation with his club.

The Belgium international contributed 10 goals and 31 assists across 49 appearances in all competitions last season and has been a big miss for Pep Guardiola. The City boss has made it clear that he won’t rush his star playmaker back and De Bruyne echoed his manager while speaking to Sky Sports on the grid at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“It’s going well, getting along. Still got a little way to go, but we’ll be there,” he said. Asked when he hopes to be back, he replied: “Hopefully something close after the New Year, if everything goes well.”

Guardiola is desperate to get back one of his best players, but is also being cautious. “I spoke with him two days ago and he said he feels really good but… recover,” Guardiola said earlier this month. “With these kind of injuries, it’s better not to put pressure. When he feels good and the doctors are confident, we can take the next step. You don’t want to go too early and have to go back again. A tough injury, surgery, so step by step.”

De Bruyne played through a slight hamstring niggle last season and came into the 2023/24 campaign without completing a proper pre-season. The 32-year-old midfielder has suggested this injury is a consequence of the relentless playing schedule.

“There will be a major scan next week and then we will know how the injury is progressing,” De Bruyne told VTM at the start of November. “Everything is going according to schedule. It’s actually going very well.
