Pep Guardiola has said the final decision over whether Erling Haaland will return for Manchester City this weekend will lie in the hands of the club’s doctors.

Haaland is on track for a record-breaking first season in English football, having plundered a stunning 22 goals in his first 16 matches. He already has 17 in the Premier League, meaning Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s joint-record of 34 goals is firmly in his sights.

However, his one-man assault on the top flight was temporarily halted last weekend when he was ruled out of the win over Leicester City with a bruised foot. He was then left out against Sevilla in the Champions League, with Julian Alavrez deputising in both games and scoring once.

Haaland returned to training on Thursday boosting hopes that he will be available to face Fulham at the Etihad on Saturday. Guardiola has suggested that a decision has yet to be made though, with several options – including missing out altogether – still on the table.

“He is much better, we will decide today [if he’s playing],” Guardiola said. “It’s a good step to start training and now we have training this afternoon and we will see.”

Asked what the decision will come down to, he added: “Himself, his opinion, the doctor’s opinion. If he’s good for 90 minutes, less than that…we will see after training.”

Alvarez, who signed in the summer along with Haaland, has been forced to play second fiddle since the start of the season, but impressed when given the chance in recent outings. Should Haaland miss out again, it would mean the Argentine would be tasked with playing a third game in a week, an issue his manager has no concerns over. “He’s so young…he’s so young and at that age you can play every day.”

Phil Foden has been another star of City’s early-season form, but has been left on the bench for the champions’ most recent pair of Premier League fixtures. Foden has six goals and three assists in the league, but Guardiola insists all of his attacking talents have to accept that rotation is a given.

Manchester City have been handed yet another injury worry with star striker Erling Haaland suffering a knock to his ankle on international duty with Norway. The 23-year-old came on at half time of his country’s friendly with the Faroe Islands and in the final minutes of the 2-0 win, he fell to the floor clutching the same ankle that has already given him some problems this season.

Earlier this month, in the home fixture against Bournemouth, Haaland was withdrawn at half time by Pep Guardiola as a precaution with the Man City boss later playing down any long-term injury issues. “Twist in the ankle, we didn’t want to take risks with him, he didn’t feel comfortable,” he said. “He’ll be back maybe Tuesday but maybe next Sunday. I didn’t speak with the doctors yet but we will see in the next days how it develops.”

Any concerns were then quickly alleviated with Haaland spotted in training before he then started and scored twice in Tuesday’s Champions League win over Young Boys. After being substituted just beyond the hour mark, Haaland then played the full 90 minutes in the chaotic 4-4 draw with Chelsea where he scored another brace.

However, there will now be some concerns within Etihad Stadium as Haaland grabbed at the same ankle that has plagued him already this month while in action for Norway. Following the injury worry, Man City are already in contact with Norway and upon receiving some treatment, he was able to continue with Norway’s team doctor, Ola Sand, and manager, Stale Solbakken, delivering an update on his injury status.

After the game, via Manchester Evening News, Sand told TV2: “It was much of the same that happened against Bournemouth a week and a half ago. He has had it before too. He gets a slight twist in his ankle, where he is a bit vulnerable. It hurts a lot right away, and then it goes away pretty quickly. Then we’ll see tomorrow how he is then.

“Now he will receive some treatment, then there will be peace and rest and then we will see how he is tomorrow morning. We have already spoken to City. Erling has spoken to both City and [chief doctor] Mario [Pafundi] already.” On whether or not Man City had set restrictions on Haaland playing for Norway, Solbakken said: “Under no circumstances have we received an enquiry from Pep Guardiola during my time with the national team. Erling is very keen to play in the national team.”
