FA aware of tragedy chanting reports
An FA Spokesperson has said on X, formerly known as Twitter: “We are aware of the reported tragedy chanting during today’s FA Cup fixture between Manchester United and Liverpool, and we will be liaising with and supporting Greater Manchester Police.
“We strongly condemn any offensive, abusive and discriminatory chants in football stadiums, and we are determined to stamp this behaviour out.
“It is entirely unacceptable and can have a lasting and damaging impact on people and communities within our game. It must stop, and we support any club and their fans who try to eradicate this from the terraces.”

That was very daft.

What a game
What a game
(Getty Images)
What a game this was at Old Trafford.
The Main Stand was singing for the first time since 1984!
The last goal was Garnacho, 19, to Amad, 21. United 4 Liverpool 3.
Madness here. Intoxicating madness.

All hail Scott McTominay

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Scott McTominay.
He scored the opener today and remains joint top scorer across all competitions for Manchester United this season, alongside Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford (7).
And yes, of course he played the full 120 minutes tonight. Did you expect anything less?

If that game felt breathless, then this will be one of the reasons why.
The two teams shared 53 shots over the course of 120 minutes of football – I make that one shot every 135 seconds.
Love it!

Liverpool’s super subs
Liverpool have had 23 goals scored by substitutes in all competitions this season (excluding own goals), the most of any side across Europe’s big-five leagues in 2023-24.
But it wasn’t enough today.

Facing a defeat that would have raised commentary on his future, Erik ten Hag was bold, went for victory.
Freestyle formation by the end but it worked: technical players high up, second balls, bravery in possession.
Committed performance from players and a major result.

Klopp: ‘We had to finish the game off & we didn’t’
Klopp: ‘We had to finish the game off & we didn’t’

To say Jurgen Klopp sounded deflated after that would be a significant understatement.
He certainly felt that a lack of freshness and a lot of games cost Liverpool today, and there’s a case to be had there for sure. But that’s the challenge of going deep into a lot of competitions – and it isn’t going to get any easier.
Not before his departure anyway. Here’s Klopp, speaking to ITV Sport:
💬 “United had a really good start. We didn’t. We adapted well and were outstanding, but we had to finish the game off and we didn’t.
“The boys gave everything. Our decision making was not great, you have to accept the result and they deserve to go to the next round.
“My boys showed incredible character again. You cannot compare our season to United’s with the amount of games. It’s fine, we deal with it.”

Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool: Stat Pack part two
Mohamed Salah has scored 13 goals in 14 appearances against Manchester United for Liverpool, including eight in his last five at Old Trafford. Indeed, no player has scored more goals against a current Premier League club since Salah joined the Reds than this (Harry Kane, also 13 v Everton).
This was the first time Liverpool lost a match in any competition this season in which they had been ahead.

The quadruple is over
The quadruple is over
(Getty Images)
Amid (Amad?) all of the Manchester United talk, it’s easy to forget: Liverpool’s nascent hopes of an unlikely quadruple are over.
Having won the Carabao Cup, they were hoping to also lift the FA Cup, the Premier League and the Europa League.
A ‘treble’ of sorts is the best they can hope for now.

Klopp’s name still being sung
Twenty minutes after the final whistle, the away end was still chanting Jurgen Klopp’s name.
This one will hurt but there are bigger prizes to pursue in the coming weeks.

Incredible. Best FA Cup game at Old Trafford. So many big performances from Manchester United players: Garnacho’s endless running, Dalot’s smarts, Mainoo’s skill.
Credit to Rashford for going 120mins and keeping his head up after missing chances.
Amad’s cameo will live long in the memory.

Manchester United 4-3 Liverpool: Stat pack part one
Manchester United have eliminated Liverpool from the FA Cup for the 11th time; only Liverpool have eliminated a single opponent more times in the competition proper (12 vs Everton).
Amad Diallo scored the latest winning goal in any match in the FA Cup proper (120:07) since West Ham v Kidderminster Harriers in February 2022 (120:48), and the latest against Liverpool in the competition since February 2016 (West Ham, 120:30).

The Athletic’s match breakdown
The Athletic’s match breakdown
The Athletic
Manchester United outperformed Liverpool by 3.4-2.1 on expected goals (xG), suggesting the win was a fair result considering the quality of the chances both teams had.
United had 28 shots to Liverpool’s 25, with both teams getting 11 of those on target.
Liverpool had more possession (58% to 42%), and more of a field tilt (54% to 46%) to indicate their slight dominance of territory.

The Mark Robins derby
The Mark Robins derby
Getty Images
What a tie for Championship side Coventry, to draw Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-finals at Wembley and return to the scene of their play-off final shootout agony in May.
They are, of course, managed by Mark Robins: the former United striker who – legend has it – scored the goal that kept Sir Alex Ferguson in his job long before he started consuming silverware at the club.
You’ll be hearing a lot about that narrative between now and the semi-finals, I’m sure.

It was a clear plan from Manchester United to attack down Liverpool’s right (their left).
Exactly 50% of their attacking touches came down the left.
Left-sided forward Marcus Rashford was instrumental throughout.
