Virgil van Dijk and Jurgen Klopp agree with Jamie Carragher on major Liverpool failure

Virgil van Dijk, Jurgen Klopp and Jamie Carragher all felt that Liverpool’s poor decision-making in the final third cost them during their goalless draw against Manchester United.

The Reds had 34 shots – the most any team has had in the Premier League this season – but failed to find a breakthrough against a resolute United side at Anfield. Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate had Liverpool’s best opportunities as they failed to win at home for the first time this season.

Liverpool had won their previous 11 matches in all competitions heading into Sunday’s game, but a solid defensive performance from United earned them a precious point on the road. As for the Reds, Klopp cut a frustrated figure after the game as his side wasted several opportunities to score.

Klopp told Match of the Day: “Some situations were where we shot from distance when there was probably a player in a better position.” Liverpool’s 34 shots was the most any side have had without scoring in the Premier League since United against Burnley in October 2016, where they had 38 efforts at goal.

Van Dijk lamented Liverpool’s composure in the final third to find the right pass or shot, with the Reds taking lots of efforts from distance throughout the match. “Sometimes we shot too easy and could have passed on the overlap,” he told Sky Sports. “The right decision was sometimes lacking.”

Klopp and Van Dijk both agreed with Jamie Carragher, who didn’t think Liverpool made the most of their dominance in order to create clear-cut opportunities. “It’s not just poor in the final third, it’s the poor decision-making from players with real quality that have let Liverpool down this afternoon,” he told Sky Sports. “Before the game, we were talking about the confidence they’d have and it seems like that might have been affecting them.”

There was an incident in the second half which saw Cody Gakpo shoot from range when a pass looked the better option. “No! Gakpo, that is so poor,” Carragher said while on co-commentary. “I’ve said this about Mo Salah, he’s been locked out on the edge of the box so far and he’s still thinking about shooting even though it’s clearly not on. Just move the ball on, don’t force chances!”

Speaking more generally on Liverpool’s performance, Klopp said: “The main thing I don’t like is the result, we should have won the game. With that number of finishes a few more should have been on target.
