Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has backed his former side to beat Manchester United this weekend as the Premier League title race continues to heat up. The Reds are one of the frontrunners this season along with Arsenal, Manchester City and surprise package Aston Villa.

The Gunners have made a decent start to their campaign, following last season’s disappointment of finishing runner’s up behind City. They currently sit second, winning 11 games from their opening 16 to keep themselves in the hunt, but defeat last time out to Villa has squeezed the competition even closer.

Hopeful of putting that defeat behind them, the north London outfit face off against Brighton this weekend with another three points in their view. “We will try our best,” Mikel Arteta told the media in the build-up. “The team loves winning and we’re desperate to do everything we can to win games.

“We showed that against Aston Villa where in my opinion we were the better team and we should have won the game. We will try again against Brighton who will make life difficult for sure.”

With top spot in sight, Arsenal may require some help elsewhere to reclaim the provisional throne, as Liverpool currently occupy that space. The Reds have a huge clash with rivals Manchester United coming up, which could throw out any result as form becomes irrelevant.

Despite that, former defender Carragher has made a confident claim that Liverpool will win the headline match over the weekend to keep top spot. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “Of course they [Manchester United] can [cause problems]. There’s been shocks in the past when we used to play against you [Gary Neville], you were always the big favourites, now and again we’d go to Old Trafford and we’d win games when we were up against it.
