The title race will go down to the final race for only the 10th time in the Premier League’s history

Championship Sunday is all about the title race in the Premier League, where just two points separate first-place Manchester City and second-place Arsenal ahead of kickoff. City’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday reaffirmed the thinking that the title race was in their hands but may still need a win over West Ham to clinch their fourth successive title — and become the first team to do so in Premier League history. Arsenal, meanwhile, chase their first title in two decades but will need more than just a win over Everton to reach those heights again.

Man City win the title with a win or if Arsenal fail to beat Everton. The Gunners have to win and see City draw or lose.

The top of the table showdown will not be the only storyline to pay attention on Sunday. Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Manchester United are locked in the midst of battles to qualify for European competitions next season, while Luton Town are almost certain to drop down to the Championship since Nottingham Forest boast a goal differential advantage of plus-12.

Sunday also marks Jurgen Klopp’s final match in charge of Liverpool, who face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield as his accomplished spell comes to an end.

The Emirates still believes

Ten or so minutes ago this felt done enough that I could make a start on the column. North London had already been quelled by news of that Foden brace and then Gueye’s free kick took a wicked deflection off Rice. Even more fans were heading for the bar. In an instant, however, we got that true title race drama. News began to filter through of Kudus’ stunner just as Tomiyasu drew Arsenal square. Suddenly word filtered around (erroneously) that West Ham had got another. Even when that was quashed the buzz built back stronger. The brass band is making an almighty racket. Arsenal still believe.

We’ve got a wild one at Luton

Two stoppage time goals as Carlton Morris nets a penalty and Raul Jimenez answered right back as Harry Wilson grabs his second assist of the game. Quite some finish but this is what the final day of the season is all about.

West Ham pull one back

42′ Kudus’ overhead kick passes the VAR check, adding a bit more intrigue to the title race. City are still in charge with a four point gap at the top of the table, but the margins are getting narrower.

Arsenal equalize

43′ Just three minutes after going down, Arsenal are back on level terms thanks to a goal from Tomiyasu. It’ll take more for the Gunners to take top spot, but it’s a deserved goal for the team that has been in charge of the match so far.

Liverpool finds a second and it’s a record breaker

Now the Reds are ahead 2-0 as no one tracked Quansah and he slots it past Sa for goal number 1223 of the Premier League season, a new record for goals in one season.

Everton take the lead

40′ Arsenal may be the favorites to win at home, but Gueye’s expertly taken freekick lands in the back of the net and gives Everton a 1-0 lead. The Gunners were already out of luck in the title race with City’s win, but this makes a bad day worse for them.

Blink and you may miss something

Alexander Isak scores now and Newcastle have two goals in a minute to go ahead 3-0. This is wrapped up but it’s clear that Eddie Howe has his team focused on ending the season on the right foot.

After already seeing one goal ruled out due to VAR the Magpies get a second

Alexander Isak turns into the provider to setup Jacob Murphy as they’re off and running after the goal from close range.

There it is for Liverpool

It’s Alexis Mac Allister who opens the scoring on an emotional day at Anfield.

Wolves see red

Nelson Semedo is sent off 29 minutes in as his yellow card was upgraded to a red card due to a challenge on Alexis Mac Allister. Liverpool were already dominating possession so it will be just a matter of time until they get an opening goal.

A second for City

18′ Foden just bagged another goal for City, finishing from close distance after Doku played a smart pass to him. It’s 2-0 to the reigning champions now, and the title feels incredibly within reach even with so much time left on the clock.

A brace for Chris Wood

This season has been quite a struggle for the Tricky Trees but they’re able to take out some of that frustration on the final day of the Premeir League season.

The Emirates is quelled

Remember what I said earlier about nothing really stopping the party in north London. It seems I might have expected more than this atmosphere delivered. You can’t really get much of a buzz going when City score one within 116 seconds. Word is just trickling in about the second. Everyone in the crowd seems to know the jig is up. A goal might at least bring back the carnival atmosphere but for now Jordan Pickford is not minded to give out freebies.

The goals are rolling in now

Moises Caicedo has scored for Chelsea following quite a hit from distance. The Blues are set for Europa Confrence Leaague at the moment. It’s the first Chelsea goal for Caicedo and what a way to do it.

Chuck Booth

It’s Dejan Kulusevski for Spurs

Sheffield United was giving Tottenham trouble with their attack but it only took 14 minutes for Spurs to find their feet as Kulusevski slots home a great shot assisted by Son. To secure Europa Leauge, this is very much needed.

Chuck Booth

Jean-Philippe Mateta is the hottest player in the Premier League

The Crystal Palace forward has now scored in three consecutive games and five of his last six appearances for Palace. The Eagles could be a team to watch next season as they could end this Premier League campaign on a tear going undefeated in their last seven matches.

Chuck Booth

May 19, 2024 at 11:13 am ET

Foden’s on the board

2′ City already score the opening goal of the game courtesy of Foden, whose strike from just outside of the penalty area marks a strong start on a day where a win is a must.

The first goal goes to Forest

Nottingham Forest could confirm their safety with a point and Chris Wood has opened the scoring only three minutes into the match.

Newcastle starters: Pope, Hall, Burn, Schar, Krafth, Joelinton, Guimares, Longstaff, Barnes, Isak, Murphy

Without Richarlison, Son will lead the line against the worst defense in Premier League history.

Tottenham starters: Vicario, van de Ven, Dragusin, Romero, Porro, Bentancur, Sarr, Johnson, Maddison, Kulisevski, Son

Can Luton Town pull off a miracle?

The Hatters would need a miracle in the goal difference department where they trail Forest by 12 goals. Even if Forest lost by five goals, Luton would still need to win by seven to close the gap and by eight to stay in the Premier League.

Luton starters: Kaminski, Hashioka, Mengi, Osho, Ogbene, Sambi Lokanga, Clark, Doughty, Morris, Adebayo, Chong

Fulham starters: Leno, Robinson, Bassey, Ream, Tete, Palhninha, Reed, Adama, Iwobi, Wilson, Jimenez

Good afternoon from London

In London today, it really seems you’re never more than six feet away from an Arsenal shirt. (Well, maybe not in N17). Even those wizened by the triumphs of 2004, 2002, 1998 and even earlier have been rummaging around in the back of the wardrobe. You’re not just seeing the Saka 7s and Rice 41s but Wright 8s, Reyes 9s. I even saw a Grimandi 18 in the wild.

It is as if there has been a great exodus from across the capital towards the Holloway Road, bars and restaurants humming with thousands of fans who probably don’t have tickets but just want to be close to history. They largely know it’s a long shot that Arsenal do indeed pip Manchester City at the post but that has done nothing at all to quell the party atmosphere. If anything it might enhance it. Catching up with some Emirates regulars earlier today there was no nerves, just pride that this team have got so far.

Saka misses out

Arsenal have a handful of stars in their lineup but are missing arguably their biggest talent of all in Saka, who will not play a part at all with injury. Here’s a look at the Arsenal and Everton starters at the Emirates.

Arsenal starting XI: Raya, White, Saliba, Gabrile, Tomiyasu, Odegaard, Partey, Rice, Trossard, Havertz, Martinelli

Everton starting XI: Pickford, Coleman, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Young, Garner, Gueye, Onana, McNeil, Doucoure, Calvert-Lewin
