City with the assured start

IAN LADYMAN: Not sure the last time In heard You’ll Never Walk Along sung with such sustained gusto as the home fans delivered it today.

I have a feeling ever home game between now and Jurgen Klopp’s last against Wolves in two months’ time will be like this.

Liverpool have to deliver results though and it’s worth noting that City have made the more assured start.

The Virgil van Dijk tackle on Phil Foden inside the Liverpool box after 90 seconds may well have prevented a goal for the champions.

Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City

More good football by City, who attack with smoothness and slickness. Bernardo Silva’s nice touch and it comes to Julian Alvarez, stationed on the left. On the outside of Harvey Elliott to shoot and Kelleher gets down to save.

Ear-splitting whistles as City enjoy some early possession. Phil Foden into the Liverpool box from De Bruyne’s pass. Loose first touch by Foden and Van Dijk steps in with the big early block tackle.

KICK-OFF: Liverpool vs Manchester City

A handshake and an embrace between Klopp and Guardiola – will they ever be in opposing dug-outs again?

The teams turn around, meaning Liverpool will be attacking the Kop in the opening 45.

Liverpool in red, City in blue. One last huddle, some last instructions and this most eagerly-anticipated of Premier League clashes is underway with the home side getting the ball rolling.

We’re ready to go

‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ rings out around the stadium and it’s time to get down to business.

Not a title decider by any means but we’ll know a lot more by full-time about their credentials.

16:42

Here come the teams!

What a sensational atmosphere inside Anfield as the two teams make their entrance. Scarves twirling, voices raised. It may be a soggy afternoon on Merseyside but this is a red hot occasion.

16:40

Another look at how the title race looks pre-match

Today’s victors will go back to the top of the table after Arsenal moved there yesterday.

A draw won’t be enough for Liverpool to return there because of their inferior goal difference.

Klopp: ‘I’m not feeling the emotion yet… I’m just happy to be here’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp speaking on Sky Sports a short while ago.

‘Its fantastic. Sold out Anfield what can I say? I am really excited.

‘There was a Liverpool football club before me and there will be Liverpool football club after me.

”But, it is not about that. I am a very emotional person but I don’t feel it at the moment, I am just happy to be here and hopefully we can do it – we better play a good football game!’

16:34

A reminder of how the two sides line up

15 minutes until kick-off at Anfield as the players head back to the dressing rooms for final preparations.

So, Jurgen Klopp has made four changes from the Liverpool side that snatched a 99th-minute winner at Nottingham Forest last Saturday.

Mohamed Salah only makes the bench but Darwin Nunez comes into the XI. Ibrahima Konate misses out, however, in a significant blow picked up against Sparta Prague in the Europa League.

Youngster Jarell Quansah comes in to replace him alongside Virgil van Dijk – a big afternoon for him.

Liverpool starting XI: Kelleher, Bradley, Quansah, Van Dijk, Gomez. Endo, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Diaz, Nunez, Elliott.

Substitutes: Adrian, Robertson, Tsimikas, Salah, Gakpo, McConnell, Clark, Nallo, Koumas.

Manchester City won the derby with Man United 3-1 a week ago and Pep Guardiola has made two changes.

Manuel Akanji comes in for Ruben Dias at the back. The other change sees Julian Alvarez preferred to Jeremy Doku on the left side of their attack.

Manchester City starting XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Akanji, Ake, Rodri, De Bruyne, Silva, Foden, Haaland, Alvarez.

Substitutes: Ortega, Dias, Kovacic, Doku, Gomez, Gvardiol, Nunes, Bobb, Lewis.

Oliver Holt’s assessment ahead of kick-off

Good afternoon also to OLIVER HOLT, our chief sports writer, who is also in the Anfield press box this afternoon.

There’s a fierce sense of anticipation at Anfield that is piercing the cold. There’s also a little apprehension.

Liverpool have played above themselves this season, even more so in recent weeks when their injuries have mounted up.

But even though City have struggled here, there is a concern among Liverpool fans that this might be the game when their injuries catch up with them.

Ian Ladyman’s pre-match thoughts

Good afternoon to Mail Sport’s football editor IAN LADYMAN, who is in situ at Anfield and give his pre-match thoughts.

I have had a fancy for Man City for this game for a while and that suspicion has only deepened since seeing the team sheets twenty minutes or so ago.

No Konate for Liverpool. No Salah. Four of Jurgen Klopp’s first choice back five missing. That’s a lot of baggage to carry in to a game like this.

Darwin Nunez will be a huge asset for the home team rampaging through the middle but I would expect Man City to shade the possession and territory and that could make it a long afternoon for Virgil van Dijk and Jarell Quansah at the middle of the Liverpool back four.

You would expect City to be happy with a point here and worth noting they haven’t actually lost a game of football since December 6.

In terms of Pep Guardiola’s team, there are no surprises. They looked stronger and more balanced last weekend against Manchester United once Julian Alvarez came on and the Argentinean World Cup winner has kept his place here.

Keane: ‘I can’t call this title race’

Liverpool and Manchester City going toe-to-toe but let’s not forget it’s Arsenal who are top.

Great respect between Klopp and De Bruyne

It’s a sign of the mutual respect between those involved on the pitch in this rivalry that the Sky Sports cameras have just shown Kevin De Bruyne giving Jurgen Klopp a hug as the Liverpool manager did his usual halfway line spying mission during the warm-ups.

Klopp will miss all this, deep down.

Mohamed Salah opens up on Klopp’s Anfield departure… and how it’ll affect his own future

You’ll remember all the interest Liverpool star Salah had from Saudi Arabia last year. That interest isn’t going to go away for sure.

So will Klopp’s exit from the club change his mind? He’s given a few clues in an interview.

‘We didn’t even think about him starting the game’

Jurgen Klopp has just told Sky that it wasn’t psosible for Salah to start.

It was not a big decision. He can come on and have a big impact.

Fair enough.

Salah only fit enough for the bench

The talking points…

Salah can only make the bench. We thought he may be fit to start after minutes in mid-week, but he is not.

Elsewhere for Liverpool, Gomez is prefered to Robertson at left back, Szobozslai is good to go and Quansah is indeed in for Konate.

For City, Dias drops to the bench, De Bruyne starts, as does Alvarez.

The stage is wel land truly set.

Liverpool’s bus takes a detour

Lewis has been on bus-watching duty, with a lot of police outside Anfield, inclduing horses and drones.

Large crowds gathered, and that’s exactly why the bus took a detour.

Probably smart, all things considered.

Stop Rodri, stop Man City

Mail Sport’s Danny Murphy has had his say on the game today and he believes the key to Liverpool’s success is stopping Rodri in midfield.

The Spaniard is arguably the key man in this Manchester City side – we saw that when he was injured earlier this season – in fact, he in unbeaten in 60 games.

It won’t be easy. Should Liverpool man-mark him? Approach it a different way?

Ready what Danny thinks below.

DANNY MURPHY: Liverpool should man-mark Rodri – he’s Man City’s key

All the evidence suggests when Rodri is allowed to run the game, City don’t lose. He’s unbeaten in his last 60 games for the club – a mind-blowing statistic.

Sky have just shown footage of the Liverpool team arriving at Anfield and Ibrahima Konate was… not on the team coach.

Police presence outside Anfield

As I briefly touched on earlier, there has been a bit of, let’s say hastiness, outide the grounds in previous fixtures between these two sides.

Team bus attacks, Hillsborough chants, and fans, including a 15-year-old child, left wounded.

We’re all good so far today though luckily, Mail Sport’s Lewis Steele has said.

Nunez vs Haaland

Another piece I would like to share with you is how Darwin Nunez fares against Erling Haaland.

The two forwards joined their sides for good money at the start of last season, and it’s fair to say there are different narratives around the two men.

But how do they square up? We’ve crunched the numbers.

They will both be so, so important today.

Read below.

Darwin Nunez is finally escaping Erling Haaland’s shadow

Haaland would go on break goal scoring records as he helped Pep Guardiola ‘s side claim a historic Treble while Nunez was best remembered for a host of glaring misses in his first season.

Klopp and Guardiola’s last hurrah?

If you hadn’t heard, Jurgen Klopp will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

He has formed quite the rivaliry with City boss Pep Guardiola. While it hasn’t always been a friendly battle between the two sides off-the-field, on it has generally been respectful and we will see that again today, I’m sure.

Today will be the last time the two longest-serving Premier League managers face off in the sivision, and potentially the last time ever. It’s been quite the journey.

Both men have been talking about it. Read more below.

How they stand

This is how we are before kick-off, then.

Three teams in what has been the closest title race for a long time.

Arsenal went top for the first time in a while after their late win over Brentford yesterday. A draw today would see them stay there, anything else and they will drop down, though the lowest they can drop is second.

The catch is they still have to play CIty this season.

It really is exciting stuff.
