WHAT HAPPENED?

City are closing in on a historic achievement as victory over West Ham on Sunday will see them become the first team ever to win four successive English league titles. But his side are still unpopular outside of City fans, chiefly as they are still under investigation by the Premier League for allegedly breaking its financial rules.

WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

“Fuck. I don’t know,” Guardiola told a press conference when asked if people liked his football team. “Sometimes people ask me what I think people think of any subject and I don’t think about it. I don’t go knocking on doors asking what they think. I don’t know, honestly.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

City have been involved in a three-way fight for the title with Liverpool and Arsenal for much of the season but it’s now between them and the Gunners after Jurgen Klopp’s side faded in the final few weeks. Guardiola’s side have won every game since drawing with Arsenal on March 31, leaving their fate in their own hands. “If you ask all the Premier League teams at the start of the season what would be the best position for the last game of the season, we are in the best position. We need to win one game to be champions so everyone would love to be in our position,” Guardiola added. “But it won’t be easy. I have the feeling it will be an Aston Villa game. We would love to be 3-0 up but it isn’t going to happen.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Sunday’s game will be David Moyes’ final game in charge of West Ham. The Scottish manager was Guardiola’s first opponent in the Premier League when City faced Sunderland in August 2016. “This type of personality in English football, he’s not going to retire. my feeling is he will be back,” Guardiola said. “If he is still involved at his age, he cannot be at home. The first game was against Sunderland and David Moyes was there, and now to win an important game he will be there. He is always so kind and it is always an honour to see him. He will do everything to beat us.”

WHAT NEXT FOR GUARDIOLA?

The City manager said his players will not have Arsenal’s game with Everton on their minds and will be purely focused on beating West Ham. “What I said to the players the last two or three games are the chances to have one weekend, where Aston Villa are winning at the Emirates, and Crystal Palace at Liverpool, is not going to happen again,” he added. “They gave us that one moment to have the destiny in our hands. If you are waiting for them to make us champions, you are wrong. If you think Everton will do something, forget about it.”
