Marcus Rashford calls for ‘u-turn’ on free school meals decision

Marcus Rashford, 22, has received nationwide praise after he convinced the Government to continue giving families in need free school meal vouchers during the summer holidays. The Manchester United star has used his time off the pitch to make a difference, and started a charity that has raised millions to feed 400,000 children, partnered on a drive to counter homelessness and now made sure 1.3m children in the UK won’t go hungry this summer.

The Red Devils striker wrote to politicians in an open letter on Sunday asking them to rethink the decision to end the programme.

A spokesman for the Department for Education said on Monday the initiative would end as planned at the completion of the school year.

However, Rashford said he would continue the campaign.

Today, the Government backtracked on its decision and announced it would extend the free meals programme, providing £120 million in funding.

Following the announcement, the footballer wrote on Twitter: ”I don’t even know what to say. Just look at what we can do when we come together, THIS is England in 2020.”

Rashford also wrote in The Times on Tuesday: “I don’t claim to have the education of an MP in parliament, but I do have a social education.

“I am clued up on the difference a U-turn decision would make on the 1.3 million vulnerable children across the UK who are registered for free school meals because 10 years ago I was one of them.”

After the U-turn was confirmed, Rashford wrote a statement “to all MPs” thanking them for giving families “one less thing to worry about”.

He added: ”This was never about me or you, this was never about politics, this was a cry out for help from vulnerable parents all over the country and I simply provided a platform for their voices to be heard.

“I stand proud today knowing that we have listened, and we have done what is right.

“There is still a long way to go but I am thankful to you all that we have given these families just one less thing to worry about tonight.

“The wellbeing of our children should ALWAYS be a priority.”
