Liverpool acted quickly to secure the signing of Arne Slot as Jürgen Klopp’s replacement in order to make the transition out of the German’s era as seamless as possible. Slot officially takes over on June 1, and with Richard Hughes coming in as the club’s new sporting director, Liverpool has gained an advantage over several of its rivals.

Chelsea fired Mauricio Pochettino last week, and Manchester United could let go of Erik ten Hag, despite securing the FA Cup at the weekend. Liverpool’s decision to get things in order will work in its favor during the summer transfer window, and avoid any wasted time and confusion over transfer strategy.

However, club football is set to take a back seat for a while, as Euro 2024 and the Copa America are just around the corner and will take precedence in June and into July.

Here, Liverpool.com takes a scan around the Premier League and across the continent to see what’s going on at Liverpool’s rivals. Manchester United is said to be looking at two Chelsea stars and Roberto De Zerbi could manage the Stamford Bridge side next season.

Manchester United eyes Chelsea pair

Fresh from winning the FA Cup against Manchester City last weekend, Manchester United will now look to the summer transfer window and aim to strengthen the squad ahead of next season. Two players the club is looking at, according to Football Insider, are midfielder Conor Gallagher and defender Trevoh Chalobah.

However, both may only arrive if the club fires Ten Hag and appoints Pochettino, with the Argentine coach having worked with the pair at Chelsea. Chelsea needs to sell players before June 30 in order to meet profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) regulations set by the Premier League.

Pochettino lasted only one season at Chelsea but was surprisingly dismissed last week, despite a turnaround in results towards the end of the season. Jürgen Klopp had always been a fan of Gallagher’s, and publicly praised the midfielder several seasons ago. The ECHO confirmed that he was an option considered during the 2023 summer transfer window.

Liverpool.com says: Whether United now fires Ten Hag after the FA Cup win remains to be seen. But should it do so and hire Pochettino, he could look to his old side to sign several players Chelsea may need to get rid of before June 30.

Italian coach ‘favorite’ for Chelsea job

Former Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi is considered to be the ‘favorite’ to take over from the recently sacked Mauricio Pochettino. According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea likes De Zerbi’s possession-based style of football and fits in with the club’s ‘ideology’.

De Zerbi guided Brighton into Europe for the first time in 2022-23, where it reached the round of 16 in the Europa League before being eliminated by Roma. De Zerbi left Brighton at the end of the season. The report states that the Italian is the ‘leading candidate’ among a four-man shortlist.

Liverpool.com says: De Zerbi would be a good choice for Chelsea considering his approach to the game and the job he did at Brighton. But whether Chelsea would be a good fit for De Zerbi, considering its track record with managers, is another thing entirely.
