Michael Robinson, former Liverpool striker and Spanish TV pundit, has died of cancer at the age of 61.

 

Robinson, who also played for Manchester City and Brighton, died after battling with skin cancer.

 

The former Republic of Ireland international’s family confirmed his death through an official statement on Tuesday.

 

“With tremendous sadness we inform you of Michael’s death. It leaves us with a great emptiness, but also countless memories, full of the same love that you have shown him. We will be eternally grateful to you for making this man SO HAPPY, he never walked alone. Thank you,” the statement read.

He scored four goals in his 24 international appearances for Ireland. The British former soccer player also moved to Spain in 1987 to play for Osasuna and settled there after retiring from football in 1989.

 

After learning the language, he became a successful commentator and media pundit on La Liga matches and international games for a variety of television and radio stations.

Tributes have continued to pour in for the late Robinson as words of his death spread.

 

 

Luiz GarcĂ­a and Xabi Alonso, former Liverpool duo, also paid tributes to him via their Twitter pages:

 

“You’ll never walk alone Michael!! Rest In Peace,” Alonso said.

Garcia wrote: “R.I.P Michael Robinson. The Liverpool legend that got in all the Spanish homes with his fantastic commentaries every Weekend !! #YNWA.”

 

 

Manchester City, one of Robinson’s former clubs, tweeted: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Michael Robinson. Everyone at Manchester City sends their love and thoughts to Michael’s family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

 

 

 

Robinson also won the league title and European Cup at Anfield in 1984.
