Sir Alex Ferguson has few regrets from his managerial career, but insists he should have told a Rangers director to “f*** off” when quizzed on his wife’s religion.
The legendary former Manchester United manager spent 57 years married to Lady Cathy, before her death. The pair initially met in Glasgow in 1964, before being married two years later.
Sir Alex, who led Manchester United to two Champions League titles and 13 Premier League crowns, called her the “leader of the family”. She insisted, during the documentary “Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In”, that when she first met him: “I thought he was a thug.”
In the documentary, the football legend also recounted his disappointment with himself for not standing up for his wife when questioned about her religious beliefs in 1967, following his move to Rangers. One club official wanted to ensure that Ferguson, a Protestant, hadn’t married in a Catholic chapel before finalising his contract. Despite feeling uncomfortable, Ferguson remained silent as he was eager to play for the club he had supported since childhood.

Ferguson said: “Glasgow is a city where there is a divide. It’s Protestant and Catholic, Rangers and Celtic. I heard Rangers wanted to sign me and of course having supported Rangers as a boy and having lived 200 yards from the ground I was pretty excited about it.”
“I put on my best suit and went across to Ibrox. The big marble hall, it’s quite impressive. When I signed for Rangers, one of the directors asked me about Cathy.”
Ferguson recalled the conversation with the director, continuing: “He says, ‘I have to ask you a question about your wife. I believe she is Catholic, were you married in a chapel?’.
“I said, ‘No we got married in the registry office,’ and he says, ‘Oh, that’s OK’.”
