Goodbye for now

So City are held at home at last.

Liverpool had to dig deep to keep up with the defending champions.

It opens up the top of the Premier League with only eight points separating the leaders City and Manchester United, with a game in hand, in seventh.

We hope you enjoyed all the build up and match coverage from Al Jazeera Sport.

Pep – ‘There is so much to be proud of’

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola saw his side drop points at home for the first time this season.

It’s the first time since Everton in December 2022 that an away side has avoided defeat at the Etihad.

“Excellent performance. Against a top, incredible team – the way we played was excellent,” Guardiola told Sky Sports.

“We were good in all departments, in the back, with our build up with the keeper.

“We conceded just two shots on target, which is a complement for how we work.

“We know the quality Erling has, it was a really good finish. He had the header as well.

“It was an excellent performance. I’m so pleased. After many years that we still perform and run that way – there is so much to be proud of.”

‘It’s a place where you have to be ready to suffer’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp gave his response to a point at the defending champions.

He also revealed that Jota and Alisson have picked up knocks but the Reds will have to wait to find out the extent of the injuries.

“It is a really good moment to be honest – it’s a tough place to come,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“It’s no coincidence that they win that many home games. It’s a place where you have to be ready to suffer.

“The quality that they have, the fluidity that they have, they really know exactly who is going where.

“We are still in a process but I think if we played really well today we could have won. We didn’t – we played OK.

“We had good moments, we scored the goal and we caused them problems, as well.

“The problem was our good moments didn’t feel that good to us but their good moments we felt more.

“You could see it in the body language in the first half so we had to stretch and push ourselves again and go out and give it a proper try.

“It’s a good result for us.”

A record for Haaland but he could have had a hat-trick

Fifty Premier League goals in 48 games smashes Andrew Cole’s previous record of 65 games.

But Haaland could have had a hat-trick against Liverpool.

Will those points be costly come May?

Alexander-Arnold: ‘It’s a point gained’

It was a big point on the road for Liverpool, who finished fifth last year.

The Reds’ vice captain, Alexander-Arnold, scored the equaliser.

“We haven’t had too many good results here in general. It’s a point gained. It wasn’t an amazing performance from us, but there were positives and we had chances to win the game,” Alexander-Arnold told Sky Sports.

“Their formation really challenged us. They have a lot of bodies in there and it’s difficult to play against.

“We regrouped at half-time and we came out with a bit more of a game plan to press them.

“We stood off them in the first half, in the second half we put respect to one side and went for it.”

City rue spurned chances

City were the better team and they had the better of the chances, too.

Haaland opened the scoring with a cracking finish from the edge of the box.

He nearly doubled the lead, 26 seconds before Liverpool’s equaliser.

And the City striker missed a late glancing header to claim the three points.

Alexander-Arnold’s drive was deserving of securing a point for Liverpool, who struggled to match their hosts but they fought to the very last to stay in it.

For City, it’s the first time they have dropped points at home this season.

Over to Arsenal

The Gunners will take top spot in the Premier League by a point from City if they beat Brentford this evening.

Liverpool remain a point behind the defending champions.

Fourth-placed Tottenham will move level with City on 29 points if they win at home to the team one position below them, Aston Villa, on Sunday.

Remarkably Manchester United could leap from sixth to claim second spot on Sunday evening if they win and Arsenal and Tottenham fail to do the same in the meantime.

It’s tight at the top of the Premier League.

The drama isn’t over though!

As the whistle blows, Nunez goes to confront Guardiola.

The managers had just shaken hands and Klopp has to turn quickly to haul his striker away.

Verbals are exchanged before Klopp intercepted and during Nunez being dragged away.

Guardiola is never afraid of a confrontation and follows the pair giving his response.

The City boss is intercepted himself and it’s all smiles to finish between the two managers once the dust settles.
