Wayne Rooney has warned Manchester United it could take them 15 YEARS to return to football’s pinnacle – and insists there is only one senior player who shouldn’t be sold.

United legend Rooney delivered a scathing verdict despite the Red Devils’ narrow 3-2 win at home to Newcastle on Wednesday night. The former Old Trafford hero declared that there needs to be a “massive clear-out” in the summer transfer window, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford potentially on the chopping block.

Fernandes, 29, has this week been linked with a move to Bayern Munich – while Cristiano Ronaldo would like the Portuguese midfielder to join him in Saudi Arabia at Al-Nassr. But Rooney wants Fernandes to stay, unlike his feelings towards most of the current squad, who can only finish as high as seventh in the Premier League this season.

“You have to build the team around Bruno,” the ex-England captain declared on Sky Sports post-match. “He’s quality and has got fight in him, and then I think all the other players, get rid of them.”

Bruno Fernandes gives Manchester United transfer ultimatum with future in doubt

Shocked by Rooney’s claim, Sky presenter Dave Jones asked the 38-year-old to elaborate. “I think you keep the young players, and you keep Bruno,” Rooney clarified. “I think it has to be a massive clear out. It has to be. It’s not going to be in one year, but I think it’s going to be in the next couple of years.

Jones offered up some names to discuss, namely goalkeeper Andre Onana, right-back Diogo Dalot and centre-half Harry Maguire.

“I think he (Onana) has had a shaky start but has got better and better over the year,” Rooney replied. “For me, Dalot’s done well, Maguire has had an in and out season. To compete in this league they need better players.

“Don’t get me wrong these players are good players. But to compete with Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal, they need better players.”
