Confirmed Man United Xi vs Brighton and Hove Albion: Lisandro Martinez starts

written by Red Billy 05/19/2024

Raphael Varane is back in the Manchester United squad to face Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex stadium this afternoon, but must make do with a place on the bench.

His comrade in arms, Lisandro Martinez, starts his first game since February after another long layoff with injury.

Martinez will partner Casemiro in central defence, flanked by Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot.

Andre Onana is in goal.

In midfield, Kobbie Mainoo is joined by Sofyan Amrabat, with Scott McTominay ahead of them in the number 8/10 role and Bruno Fernandes in the false 9.

Rumour had it that Alejandro Garnacho was going to be rested on the left wing, presumably with the FA Cup final in mind, with his place taken by Marcus Rashford.

Rasmus Hojlund was to be restored to the centre forward position having been rested against Newcastle in midweek but reports suggest he was pulled out at the last minute and Garnacho brought back into to the team.

This means that Rashford stays on the bench, where he and Varane are joined by Altay Bayindir, Jonny Evans, Willy Kambwala, Toby Collyer, Christian Eriksen, Antony and Hojlund.

The fact that the Dane is on the bench suggests his withdrawal was just precautionary.

Anthony Martial and Victor Lindelof were expected to make the bench after rejoining full training, but are not included in the squad.

Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Tyrell Malacia are still injured.

Kick-off at the Amex is at 4pm.
