Garnacho battles for the ball

Manchester United were embarrassed against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

United were defeated by Newcastle at St. James’ Park last weekend, but the players responded to a rallying cry from Erik ten Hag by delivering an improved display to win 2-1 against Chelsea earlier in the week.

The Bournemouth game was a chance to secure back-to-back wins, but that opportunity was spectacularly wasted, with United suffering a 3-0 loss after goals from Dominic Solanke, Phillip Billing and Marcos Senesi.

The defeat is arguably the worst of Ten Hag’s reign yet and questions of the manager will be asked again, with tough games against Bayern Munich and Liverpool at Anfield coming in the next week.

United have now lost 18 games in all competitions in 2023, which is their highest total in a calendar year since 1989.

Fernandes names United’s biggest problem

Bruno Fernandes blasted United’s lack of consistency after Saturday’s humiliating 3-0 loss against Bournemouth.

United have struggled with consistency all season and they suffered another major setback against Bournemouth, who took the lead in just the fifth minute after a brilliantly taken goal from Dominic Solanke.

Bournemouth were happy to defend after opening the scoring, but United failed to create any meaningful chances and Anthony Martial was replaced by Rasmus Hojlund shortly after half-time.

Although United picked up the tempo for the second half, Bournemouth scored twice in quick succession after the hour mark and they were denied a fourth goal in injury time when VAR intervened.

The result was Bournemouth’s first win at Old Trafford

and United have now lost 18 games in all competitions in 2023, their highest total in a calendar year since 1989.

A visibly disappointed Fernandes was the United player to address the media after the game.

17:25KEY EVENT

United fans make feelings clear with reaction towards players

As it dawned on one of the Bournemouth analysts they were 3-0 up at Old Trafford, he laughed. Not for the first time this season, Manchester United were laughable.

There were boos at half time and boos at full time for the umpteenth time this season at this storied stadium. The only cheer some United fans enjoyed was at the expense of their No.9’s removal.

“We want four, we want four,” the Bournemouth fans urged. They got a fourth but it was ruled out. This was their first-ever win at Old Trafford and they delighted in a rendition of “Old Trafford is falling down”. Erik ten Hag was subjected to a chorus of “You’re getting sacked in the morning”.

A gaggle of United players were booed as they approached the tunnel by those who remained beyond the final whistle. Ten Hag was not. As far as the matchgoers are concerned, certain players are the problem rather than the manager.

17:00KEY EVENT

United player ratings as Martial and Fernandes poor

Andre Onana

Unconvincing with his volleyball shot-stopping technique, albeit from Dominic Solanke’s offside header. Did not cover himself in glory for the last goal. 4

Diogo Dalot

Offered little against a disciplined Bournemouth defence and Antony did most of the running down the right. Selfishly shot when Rasmus Hojlund was available. 4

Harry Maguire

United’s player of the season so far was their player of the first half but he lost Marcos Senesi for the third goal and culpable for the last goal. 5

Luke Shaw

Moved back to centre back and Solanke was a handful but it was Philip Billing who outjumped him to score. 5

Sergio Reguilon

Proactive but seldom incisive in the final third until early in the second half. Defensively non-existent. 4

FT – MUN 0-3 BOUKEY EVENT

FULL-TIME!

United are embarrassed by Bournemouth, who earn their first win at Old Trafford.

Awful performance. Where do United go from here?

90+3′ – MUN 0-3 BOUKEY EVENT

GOAL DISALLOWED

Thankfully, an embarrassing fourth goal has been disallowed by VAR.

90+3′ – MUN 0-4 BOUKEY EVENT

GOAL! 4-0 BOURNEMOUTH!

Bournemouth’s high press forces and error and they score a fourth.

This is the worst result of Ten Hag’s tenure.

90′ – MUN 0-3 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Five minutes added

United want to be put out of their misery here.

84′ – MUN 0-3 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Fernandes booked

Fernandes is shown a yellow card for some back chat to the referee.

81′ – MUN 0-3 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Bournemouth fans’ taunts

Bournemouth fans are singing ‘you’re getting sacked in the morning’.

79′ – MUN 0-3 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Triple substitution

Evans, Rashford, Pellistri ON.

Shaw, Antony, Garnacho OFF.

76′ – MUN 0-3 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Another awful result

It’s one step forward and two steps back for United this season. They’ve been unable to put together a consistent run of performances and they’ve struggled to find a way through Bournemouth’s deep line today.

72′ – MUN 0-3 BOUKEY EVENT

GOAL! 3-0 BOURNEMOUTH!

And it’s now three as Bournemouth score twice in quick succession.

How has that happened? United looked bright at the start of the second half.

69′ – MUN 0-2 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Normal service resumes

United needed to build on their win against Chelsea with another good performance and they’ve failed to do that. They’ve been really poor this afternoon and Bournemouth deserve their lead. Normal service has resumed.

67′ – MUN 0-2 BOUKEY EVENT

GOAL! 2-0 BOURNEMOUTH!

Bournemouth double their advantage thanks to a goal from Billing.

United gave the ball away cheaply and that was far too easy.

66′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

What was Dalot doing?

Dalot takes a shot from an impossible angle when the pass to Hojlund was on – poor decision.

63′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

The game is open

There’s space opening up across the pitch, but United need to create some clear-cut chances to capitalise, Bournemouth are happy to protect their lead and counter-attack.

60′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSAMUEL LUCKHURST

Martial was poor again

Even United wouldn’t dare suggest the cheers for Martial were down to his eight-and-a-half years of sterling service. His recall has gone as predictably badly as we all thought it would.

It cannot be pleasant for Martial but he does not bust a gut, his body language is poor and he should not be getting a look-in.

58′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Bournemouth defending well

United have been much better since half-time but an equaliser is proving to be elusive.

55′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Hojlund comes on

Loud cheers as Hojlund replaces Martial, who unfortunately did nothing this afternoon.

Hojlund needs a first league goal and it would be great to see him get it here.

53′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Hojlund coming on

It was only a matter of time and Hojlund is now preparing to come on for Martial.

51′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSAMUEL LUCKHURST

United have upped the tempo

United have been more purposeful in the first four minutes of this half than they were in the entirety of the first half. They have upped the tempo and Bournemouth are already having to resort to some last-ditch defending when there is a lot of time left on the clock.

49′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

McTominay with an attempt

McTominay and Fernandes have just had chances and that’s better from United, who have put Bournemouth under some pressure at the start of this second half.

47′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

No changes at the break

Ten Hag made no half-time changes but Hojlund is already warming up.

45′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

We’re back under way

Here we go for the second half.

HT – MUN 0-1 BOUSAMUEL LUCKHURST

Half-time ratings

Here are your half-time ratings:

Onana

Unconvincing. 5

Dalot

Done little. 5

Maguire

Decent again. 7

Shaw

Sloppy start. 6

Reguilon

Proactive but not incisive. 6

Amrabat

Often caught out. 5

McTominay

A drop-off. 5

Antony

Probed with no success. 6

Fernandes

Working hard. 6

Garnacho

Ineffectual half. 5

Martial

Harmless attempt on target but next to no presence. 4

HT – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

HALF-TIME!

Solanke’s goal is the difference at half-time.

United trail to Bournemouth.

45′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

Four minutes added

We’re almost at half-time.

42′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSAMUEL LUCKHURST

Solanke has been excellent

Solanke would be an immense upgrade on Martial. He has a presence, he gets chances and he scores goals. He’s scored one and hit the post in under 40 minutes today.

United really do need to make a change at the pause. They have been second best. Some fans on the monitor are yawning.

41′ – MUN 0-1 BOUSTEVEN RAILSTON

CHANCE!

Solanke hits the post and he’s been a real threat throughout this first half.
