The Athletic
It was a clear plan from Manchester United to attack down Liverpool’s right (their left).
Exactly 50% of their attacking touches came down the left.
Left-sided forward Marcus Rashford was instrumental throughout.

Ten Hag hails his players: From ‘outplayed’ to ‘outstanding’
Ten Hag hails his players: From ‘outplayed’ to ‘outstanding’
Is Erik ten Hag having a good time of it at Manchester United? Who knows… But this is definitely a good day, and they could well be set for another FA Cup final.
Here’s Ten Hag, who has just been speaking with ITV Sport:
💬 “The first 30 minutes was the best of our whole season. We were acting as a team but then we got gaps between the lines and you can’t allow this against one of the best teams in Europe. They outplayed us.
“We made changes, we took risks and the players were wonderful. The attitude was great. A strong belief to win this game.
“We have a team that is for the future. Coming up are players who are developing very well like Diallo, Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo.”

More from Amad: It’s the best goal of my life
And United’s Amad, speaking to ITV post-match, added: “What a game! Today we deserved this win, we played very good, it was one of the best games of the season. It’s the best goal of my life, it’s a really important moment.
“You need to believe in every single moment, this is football.
“When Garnacho gave me the ball I wanted to give it him back but it was a good moment to shoot. I am disappointed to be sent off but what is important is to win. To beat Liverpool is a big, big moment for me.”

Manchester United 4 Liverpool 3 – The Briefing
Amad Diallo has an incredible story himself so it seemed right for him to seal victory (and then get sent off) for Manchester United against Liverpool in this FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford.
United ended Liverpool’s hopes of winning four trophies with a 4-3 victory after extra time and will have brought some relief to their manager Erik ten Hag.
After normal time ended 2-2, following a late equaliser from United winger Antony, Marcus Rashford scored to make up for an earlier glaring miss following Harvey Elliott’s extra-time strike for Liverpool.
Amad’s late finish, followed by getting a second yellow card for taking his shirt off while celebrating his goal, was the final moment of a ridiculous match. United will now face Coventry City in the semi-final while Manchester City play Chelsea.
Below, The Athletic’s James Pearce, Dan Sheldon and Mark Carey analyse all the action from Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes was a happy Manchester United captain after that, as you can imagine. Here’s what he said to ITV Sport immediately after full-time in extra time:
💬 “We have a young squad. They need time and when they have the chance to play, they have to show they have the quality to play for Manchester United.
“We always have belief, the problem is we have not been consistent with our performances. We always give everything but at this club, we always have to have high standards.
“This season has not been at the level we want but we want to improve. We have always said our goal was to get into the top four and try to win the FA Cup. We will do all we can for those goals.”

Amad: It’s a dream come true for me
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, match-winner Amad said: “Dream come true. That goal will give me a lot of confidence and I want to continue like this. I’m very happy. The most important thing is to win this game.
“I wanted to give it back to Garnacho but I see the defender and I have to go on my own.
“It is unbelievable, it is a dream for me to score the last goal for Manchester United. I want to say thanks to the supporters. It is one of the best games of the season so we want to continue like this.”

Reminder: FA Cup semi-final draw
Holders Manchester City will face Chelsea in the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Manchester United’s reward for beating rivals Liverpool in a classic quarter-final is a last-four tie with Coventry City.
The semi-final draw leaves open the possibility of a repeat of last year’s Manchester derby final where City came out winners on the way to the treble.
United emerged the victors from a topsy turvy-tie against Liverpool, going through 4-3 after extra-time thanks to Amad’s 121st minute-winner at Old Trafford.

Diallo will miss one game
I erroneously said earlier that Amad Diallo would miss the FA Cup semi-final (against Coventry) after his red card at the end.
That was wrong – in fact, he will be banned for United’s next Premier League game, against Brentford on March 30.
Red cards are not competition specific.

The story of Amad Diallo – and the man accused of trafficking him to Europe
The story of Amad Diallo – and the man accused of trafficking him to Europe
(Getty Images)
Hamed Mamadou Traore meets The Athletic on the side of a nearby main road in Abata, Ivory Coast. The fact that Traore is willing to speak at all is surprising.
In the summer of 2020, he was at the centre of one of football’s most high-profile trafficking stories, having been accused by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) of forging documents that enabled two players from Serie A, the top flight of Italian football, to have entered the country illegally.
They were Amad Diallo and Hamed Junior Traore. At the time of the FIGC hearing, Diallo was just emerging at Atalanta: less than a year later, his promise was recognised by Manchester United, who spent £37million to bring him to the Premier League.
Their cases are not unique in a continent which, according a 2013 estimate by the charity Foot Solidaire, might see 15,000 young men trafficked out of West Africa each year with the aim of pursuing a career in football. They have sometimes paid thousands of pounds to a middleman, only to get stranded in Europe, without the delivery of a promised trial or even accommodation.
In that context, Diallo and Junior Traore may seem like two of the ‘lucky’ ones — yet their cases also raise troubling questions, not least for the man accused of trafficking them. Dive deeper into the story here.

Rashford glad for a happy ending

Amazing that Marcus Rashford missed that great chance to win it in normal time, and then he scores in extra-tie to set up that stunner of a win. Here he is, talking to ITV Sport:
💬 “I haven’t had the season I wanted but night likes this at Old Trafford are what it’s all about. I had to score that chance at the end, I wish it was done half an hour ago… But we got the job done and we have to get something out of this season.
“It’s a massive game in the history of Manchester United. It gets us through to a semi-final but even a normal game against Liverpool we have to win.
“Amad (Diallo) has been working hard and hasn’t had the opportunities he wants. There’s no better way to push for more, than nights like this.”
