Manchester United fans are begging Andre Onana not to come back after the hapless goalkeeper produced yet another disasterclass, this time at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Cameroon star conceded three times as his side were beaten 3-1 by Senegal, leaving them with just one point after two games. Ex-Liverpool ace Sadio Mane netted Senegal’s third in injury time and fans on social media could barely believe the pitiful attempt Onana made to try and reach the shot, which trickled past him into the bottom corner.

The former Inter Milan and Ajax keeper has had a torrid debut campaign at Old Trafford, having produced several high-profile blunders in key games, and after seeing his latest performance for Cameroon, Red Devils fans are desperate for him to stay put in the Ivory Coast.

“I think Onana might be the worst keeper in Man Utd history. Honestly, I’d take Mark Bosnich back at this point,” one Red Devils raged. Another said: “Onana disasterclasses are so regular now they don’t even upset me. Sigh.”

A third fumed: “We literally forced David de Gea out the club for THIS. We are a joke.” A fourth added: “Sell him. Sell him when he gets back. Or better yet, let him stay there.”

The defeat means Cameroon will need to beat Gambia in their final group match to stand the best chance of automatic qualification for the knockout rounds. Failure to win however could see them eliminated at the group stage for just the second time since 1996.

Onana delayed his trip to the AFCON in order to feature in Man United’s Premier League clash with Tottenham on Sunday. He flew out to West Africa that night and was set to play in Cameroon’s opening group match against Guinea the following day, but a last-minute flight diversion, due to bad weather, scuppered his ambitious plans.

As a result, Cameroon turned to Onana’s cousin, Fabrice Ondoa, who plays for French third-tier Nimes, to fill in for him. Perhaps Erik ten Hag should consider doing the same…
